Our cruise has begun. Our boat is beautifully designed and appointed, and we have a very comfortable cabin. We are looking forward to no bag dragging every day or so.
We left Gruž Port and headed to a nearby island of Mljet. There is a national park on the island that covers its western end. We hired e-bikes and explored the two of the lakes, visiting the 12th-Century St Mary’s Benedictine Monastery located on an island on the big lake. We loved swimming in the crystal clear saltwater lake, spotting tiny stripey fish. We also spotted one of the island’s mongooses (mongeese?) that were introduced to clear the island of snakes. We weathered a short rain squall and returned to the boat for an evening’s introduction to local Croatian wines, that cwere chosen to compliment our four-course seafood dinner. The sommelier talked us through some Pošip varietals that are local to the area. The evening was completed with live music and some dancing.
It has been interesting learning about the protocols for docking – larger boats nearer to the wharf, then they line up next to each other. You end up walking through the other boats to get to shore, which makes for a slightly noisier night but nothing ear plugs can’t cope with.
